My daughter who is 19 years old needs a car for two months(June -July)
this summer for commuting to a job in San Diego. I am looking for a
car rental or leasing company that will rent/lease a car to her at a
reasonable price. She has a credit card and a Illinois drivers license
with no traffic violations. Most of the mainstream rental companies I
contacted do not rent to persons less than 21 or 25 years of age. Even
if I rent on her behalf, the additional driver age restriction is 21
or 25.
Can you find me a car rental company in the San Diego area that will
rent to a person 19 years old?
If not a San Diego rental, pick up and return any where else in
California is Ok as well.
Are there any alternatives to renting if she needs the car for only
two months in the summer?

Hello infoseekerphil-ga,

Your research is correct in that no major car rental companies are
willing to rent to someone under 21 (or 25) except for some corporate
rental exceptions. Digging further, I was able to locate three auto
rental companies that might serve your needs. Two are in San Diego and
one is in Van Nuys. All three are willing to rent to those 18 and over
but all three also have special requirements and/or surcharges. I hope
that one of these will be able to rent to your daughter.

Wishing you well.

Can I rent a car if I'm under 25?
Yes, you can rent a car if you are over 18. These are the conditions;
18 - 21, and 22 - 25, you must show proof of an auto liability policy
and have an additional policy covering comprehensive and collision
damage that will bridge to the rental car and have a major credit card
in your name. Check or debit cards are accepted for underage drivers
only if there is a comprehensive and collision policy in affect that
bridges to the rental car. Another option is to be named as an
additional insured on a some one else's auto liability policy that
will offer the same privilages, to the additional insured, as that of
the policy holder and have comprehensive and collision coverage that
bridges to the rental car, or use a credit card, in lieu of a
comprehensive and collision policy, that will offer car rental damage
protection as a benefit to the card holder. In addition there is a
charge of $10.00 per day through the ages between 18 - 21. Ages 22-25
respectively, the same as the above conditions apply, although you get
a considerable discount of 50% in your underage fee.

In some states, Enterprise allows drivers as young as 18. I belive
there's a $25/day fee for young drivers, but I could be mistaken.

Also look into renting through your daughter's employer. Many
companies have corporate rental agreements with Avis (owned by
Cendant). You would still have to pay for the rental, but by renting
through a company, you'll get a lower rate and avoid the young-driver
fee.

HI,
There may be used car dealers that would be willing to rent a car to
you and allow your daughter to drive. Might check in your area to see
if there is any response, you can consider whether to let her drive to
San Diego, or whether it's worth the trouble to find a dealer in SD
that would rent. Or maybe you have contacts there who could help.
