What percentage of Americans had access to the Internet (either via
work, school, or home) during the following years: 1996, 1997, 1998,
1999, and 2004?


I already know the percentage of Americans who had online access
(1995-21.0%, 2000-66.9%, 2001-72.3%, 2002-71.1%, 2003 75.9%)  from
digitalcenter.org.

The U.S. census bureau has the data you're looking for, except that it
leaves out the 'school' category.  The link to 1997-1999 data is here:
http://www.census.gov/prod/www/statistical-abstract-us.html

A quick summary says:
1997:46,305/193,462=24%
1998:62,273/195,192=31%
1999:83,677/197,462=42%

Unfortunately, I couldn't find 1996 or 2004 data.
