Where (online or offline, online preferred) can I read about the
history of playback control symbols (play,
pause, eject, etc.)?

Boomspy --

This would be considered pretty vague by researchers. Some things to consider:
* mechanical or virtual (software) controls?
* since the first recording devices? Realize that wax cylinders were
early devices, following by vinyl records, then around World War II a
variety of magnetic devices.
* since the beginning of the use of magnetic tape?
* do you want to exclude paper tape?

Best regards,

I'm interested in the development of the user interface aspect of
playback controls. Specifically:

* Why/how did the 'play' symbol develop into a triangle pointing to the right?
* Why is the stop icon a square?

etc...

Thanks!
