The internet is based on Ethernet
and the TCP/IP protocol. These are
typically independent of operating
system, processor type, etc.

At most, localized settings of the
computer can cause slight degradation
in speed but nothing that would require
a test specifically for a certain
platform.

A speed tester that I use most often is:

At the top, near the middle is an
icon for Speed Meter.

This following link may take you directly 
to the speed test, but it looks like a
"created URL" and may expire.

Hello alienintelligence-ga

Thank you for your request for clarification.

I checked out your links and the speed test did work. However that is
not exactly what I sought. I am still curious... is there a speed test
that works best on Macs? The reason I ask is that the mcafee.com test
works well on a PC but doesn't work at all on my Mac.

I have a Mac at home and a guy from 2wire told me about this one

The internet is not based solely on ethernet.  Ethernet is for LAN
(Local Area Networks).  The internet is more than just LANs.

The 2wire link works fine.

Here is another site where you can test your internet connection.  It
isn't MAC specific.
