Dear hose7,

I have found the first title, together with the option to have a
photocopy or other reproduction made of it. However, it seems that
"The Life and Adventures of John A. Murrell, the Great Western Land
Pirate" is not just an article, but an entire illustrated book of 126
pages, written by the National Police Gazette editor George Wilkes.
But the publisher and the year are correct, so I think that this might
actually be what you are looking for. Would you like information on
where the book is stored and how to obtain a reproduction?

As for the second artice: It did not find any trace of it. Are you
sure about the title and the publishing details?

Regards,
Scriptor

Dear scriptor-ga,

I cannot be more exact about the second citation, because my source is inexact.

However, I am willing to pay the fee of $50.00 if you provide me
complete and exact instructions how I can buy a photo duplication of
the 126 page book you have described.

Dear hose7,

I will not finalize this answer until you have confirmed that the
information is what you need. First, the basics:

1) The book "The Life and Adventures of John A. Murrell, the Great
Western Land Pirate" is stored in the Library of Congress.

2) The Library of Congress offers fee-based photoduplication of almost
all works in their collettions on request. Restrictions on
availability for duplication are based on physical conditions of the
materials, copyright limitations, and legal restrictions imposed on
particular collections. However, as long as this particular book is
not in extraordinarily bad condition, I can't imagine that any legal
restrictions would apply to this work from the year 1847.

Now, the details:

I. The catalog record of the book is:

C Control Number:	18000347
Type of Material:	Text (Book, Microform, Electronic, etc.)
Brief Description: Howard, H. R.
The life and adventures of John A. Murrell, the great western land
pirate, with twenty-one spirited illustrative engravings. New York, H.
Long & Brother, 1847.
126 p. illus. 22 cm.
CALL NUMBER: PS2014.H153 L5 1847
-- Request in: Rare Book/Special Collections Reading Room (Jefferson LJ239)

II. The instructions for ordering photoduplications and related
additional information are described in detail on the website of the
Library of Congress' Photoduplication Service:
http://www.loc.gov/preserv/pds/order.html

If this is helpful for you, please let me know.

Best regards,
Scriptor

Dear Scriptor-ga,

The information you have provided at 16:21 PDT is very helpful.

If I find that you are correct about the process you describe
with the Library of Congress, you will have earned your fee and I
shall be quite satisfied, regardless of the outcome in this particular
case.

I'll let you know if I have any luck tomorrow.

                                             Regards,

                                             Hose7-ga

Dear Scriptor-ga:
Thank you for your excellent help. I now pronounce my question
answered, and authorize payment from my debit card.
I am in contact with several libraries, asking for photocopies of
the item, and I do not know if the item will be everywhere too fragile
to photocopy, but that should not be your concern.

                                 Thanks heaps,

                                 W. E. Henry

This is a longshot but this title matches the beginning of the title,
the publisher and the year of your second request:

Pictorial life and adventures of Mrs. Whipple & Jesse Strang
the murder of Mr. Whipple
by H R Howard
1848
English Book : Microform leaves 19-73 : ill. ; 22 cm.
Philadelphia : T.B. Peterson & Bros.,

This was found on a search of the WorldCat database and picked up on
the name Murrell because of the description in the series field:

"Series: Murrell, Hare, and Turpin series; Variation: 19th-century
legal treatises ;; no. 36635-36636."

------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are many libraries throughout the US which own this book. I
hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further
information.
