There's been a lot of discussion in the UK press recently about
teaching children to read using a system called Synthetic Phonics.
Many reports say that this involves teaching the basic 42 phonemes of
the English language. But exactly what are those 42 phonemes? Can
you supply a list?

Hi michael2:

The following is the best list of the 42 English phonemes that I could find:

URL: http://www.auburn.edu/~murraba/spellings.html

Search Strategy (on Google):
* "42 english phonemes"

I hope that helps.
