Question ID: 509687
I have an old 1994 Ford Taurus. It has developed the VERY annoying
habit of DINGing. The chime that rings when you leave the headlights
on or when you leave the keys in the ignition now rings almost all the
time.
When headlights are on (but I'm driving and it shouldn't ring) it
rings all the time. When headlights are off, it often rings unless I
move the ignition key around.
What I'd really like to do is totally disable the chime. I've been
told by a mechanic that the chime is buried in the dashboard so deep
that it would probably cost about $300 to get to it. Any suggestions?

Perhaps you can remove the fuse that controls that chiming function.

Be careful if you decide to remove the fuse - it could control several
other things also. I have a similar problem with my car and now I have
no headlight on alarm... or interior lights... or horn. I checked it
out in the repair manual and the same fuse feeds lots of stuff through
a module in the dashboard. I tried and tried to isolate just the
headlight alarm and maybe replace it, but it really is buried so deep
in the dashboard that I don't even want to mess with it.

Is it the headlamp chime or the door ajar chime? Or are they the
same? I'll take a look at the wiring diagram and ge back to ya.

autoguy-ga asked "Is it the headlamp chime or the door ajar chime? Or
are they the same?"
Jeff replies: It's the same chime sound. And, I'm having trouble
with both. Sometimes the door-ajar (key in) chime goes off, but I can
jiggle the key and make it stop. The head-light chime always rings.
Thansk for checking. Jeff

Sounds like a problem with the key warning chime that attaches to the
lock cylinder. Simple and cheap fix would be to cut or unplug the
single wire that goes to the back of the ignition lock cylinder. Just
remove the steering column covers. If you cut it tape the ends. Or
replace the sensor.
  hope this helps, nick

Autoguy, If I cut that wire at the ignition cylinder, will that stop
it from dinging all the time when the headlights are on?

Not sure wiring diagram is vague,it is possible though, but I'd try to
unplug it first. It can't hurt to try.
