Hi..I have a book bought from a second hand book store dated 1963
called The Shoes of the Fisherman by Morris West. Inside is an
elaborate coat of arms pasted to the first page, I belive it is a
papal coat of arms but more info would help! It has the papal tiara,(3
crowns) silver and gold keys of St Peter, a red ribbon that entwines
the keys, an oval cartouche (split in two with a dove and olive branch
on a blue background and some sort of black animal with a pointy face
- not a bear - standing on it's hind legs on a purplish background
with squiggles! On the red ribbon at the front (the same ribbon
entwining the keys)is the motto "EX ORIENTES LUX" which I think means
' from the east comes light'. The book is dedicated to Canon Paul from
Vivienne. Anyone know who this book belonged to?

Hello magrat-ga,

Please clarify what you are looking for. The only question you pose
is, ?Anyone know who this book belonged to?? Is this the question you
hope a researcher will answer? If it is, you haven?t told us anything
that would help us track down the origins of the used book you have.

You gave a lot of information about the papal coat of arms inside the
book. Would you like to have information about this coat of arms? Each
Pope has their own coat of arms so the one you?re describing is
probably the one of the fictional Pope in the book. Are you looking
for information about this specific coat of arms (how to interpret the
symbols) or about papal coats of arms in general?

I started researching your question because I thought it interesting
in light of the continuous coverage of the death of John Paul II and
the selection of Benedict XVI. I?m afraid I don?t know what direction
to take without further input from you.

I look forward to your clarification.

Greetings,
your description does not seem to match those of any of the Popes
since 1963, which has to suggest that the coat of arms you describe is
a fantasy based on the papal tiara and crossed keys,, but since the
beast doesn't appear on the arms of any of the Popes since 1963, and
since it would be very unlikely since the schism with the Eastern
Church that that Latin phrase would be used, I cannot imagine that it
is authentic.
The book was a best seller.

Is the dedication printed, the author's dedication to the canon who
helped him with historical, religious details?

I would surmise that the
