Any ideas on how to do this?
I did a Web search on this, and the best I could find (and it doesn't
seem to be working) is to boil the socks with lemon juice
for a while, then do a regular washing.

Have you tried bleach? Soak them in a bucket of hot water with about a
cup of liquid bleach, then do a regular white wash. If the ground-in
dirt is on the bottom, try one of those gel pre-wash soakers (can't
think of a brand-name at the moment). You might have to repeat the
bleach process once or twice, but be aware that too much bleach can
weaken fibers.

jab:

I appreciate the "answer" but I actually have already tried bleach.
As it turns out, the lemon juice tactic did the trick.

I wouldn't bother..

Why not just buy new socks?
Seems they easier thing to do.
