Hello lostmind,

I believe the movie you seek is: The Seekers. :-)

It's a TV movie from 1979, based on a novel by John Jakes. The plot
you've described fits closely with the descriptions on these pages:

"Randy Mantooth: Movies and Shows" ["The Seekers (1979)"]
The Official European Randolph Mantooth Fan Club

"The Seekers" [scroll to review by "The saga continues", by Beverley

If you believe that this isn't the correct movie, please let me know,
so that I may do follow-up research.
