Not sure if this is it but try this... http://www.preactor.com/webhelp/PEG_DATA_FILE_NAME.htm which would suggest that its a system file and you would use notepad to view it... |

Try a program called irfanview (you can find it easily with google.com). I have yet to come across any picture format it can't handle. Good Luck |

Usually if you open a file in wordpad, the first line or two will contain a string telling you a little more information about the file and which program created it. For instance, a JPG looks like: JFIF Created with The GIMP Even if there isn't a comment added by the program that created it, at least this will tell you if the original extension really was PEG. It also may suggest an alternate extension (as with JPG->JFIF above) to search for. Jem Tallon |

I try to open the peg file in wordpad and there is this word: "GEKV" follow by spaces and some symbols and then "load_sopot.tga" in the first line. After that it is just all the symbols... I check the game irectories but could not find the tga file... |

ReaGif v. 1.2 lists PEG as one of its supported file formats. http://www.reasoft.com/products/reagif/ Hope it helps. From their website: ... allows you to convert any image file format including the most popular (JPG, BMP, FPX, PEG, PCD, PCL, PCX, PSD, PICT, PNG, TIFF, TGA, SGI, etc.) to GIF and then edit it with rotating, stretch, crop, border, etc. |

I download the program and install but the program doesn't reconize the peg files I have. Seems like the peg file the program supported is different structured than mine... :( |

From the sound of it, this file is of some internal format to Red Faction. It's entirely possible that the game uses its own encryption methods to create the file and that, consequently, there is no editor for it. Personally, I wouldn't recommend editing it to find out. But if you really want to edit some of the contents of this file, it may be possible with a Hex editor (http://www.expertcomsoft.com) or using Resource Explorer (http://www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/d7resourceexplorer.htm). Of course, if you do, make sure to backup the file first so you can replace it with a clean copy if this doesn't work. Also, http://www.watto.org/extract/program/archives.txt had the following information about the file in question: +---------------------+ | Red Faction 2 *.peg | +---------------------+ 4 - Header (GEKV) 4 - Version (6) 4 - Directory Size (first file offset = dirSize + 32) 4 - File Data Size 4 - numFiles 4 - null 4 - numFiles 4 - Unknown (16) // for each file 2 - Unknown 2 - Unknown 4 - Unknown 2 - Unknown 2 - Unknown 48 - Filename (null) 4 - File Offset [+ first file offset] X - File Data |

I nearly forgot to mention this. You may also want to try Game Extractor to open and edit the contents of the file. Apparently it is able to open PEG files, since that listing I just posted came from their website. You can find this program at: http://www.watto.org/extract/index.html On another tangent, it also appears that the TGA file is a bitmap. Perhaps if you could find it, that would help you to narrow down what information is in the file? Jem Tallon |
