Hello,
I'm in the process of evaluating an involvement in the economics of a
web site from a revenue sharing point of view.
The site is suppposed to be supported by those roles and revenue will
cover cost and then the remainder will be distributed based on a
percentage between the different roles:
1. Marketing ................. 0%
2. Content ................... 0%
3. End user support .......... 0%
4. Development ............... 0%
5. Business Administration ... 0%
6. Technical Administration .. 0%
An explanation of why you feel the recommended percentage weight is
appropriate would be grate.
Hope to hear your 2c worth as well. :-)

hi lizardnation,
I'm afraid you'll have to tell us a bit more about the web site,
because there can be enormous differences in the numbers you require
for different types of sites.
Take for example a magazine site - the content production is one of
the major cost factors there. Now compare it to a site like ebay -
compared to the first example the content spending will be minor in
relation to other costs because the customers provide the content
basically for free.
Bye,

Hello Voyager,
The site would be a general interest portal with articles and
discussion areas as well as a directory that requires a reviewer to
process each submission.
Discussions are moderated.
Articles and reviews as well as some of the moderators are at a cost
and you would be safe in assuming it is a magazine sort of site.
Hope I've clarified enough?

Hi again, lizardnation,
do you want those numbers after the site is already "in business" for
a while or should initial investments figure into the numbers.
In fact I probably should mention a few other things. I'm saying this
as somebody who already launched a cooperative magazine site, and had
to go through all the stages up to its cancellation. It is very
important that you can justify the numbers that you're asking for
towards the partners as most of them usually think their contribution
is worth more.
I don't think you can actually get the information you're looking for
here. What you really need is an in-depth analyses of what will be
necessary to set up your particular site. This will require things
like
- Can you use a standard product to run it or is there a need for a
custom made software. Will one of the partners provide this or is it
going to be paid for by all?
- Which mix will you use in marketing your site initially and over
time? Do you have partners which will use their own channels to
provide advertisement space for your site? Do you maybe already have
an established name backing you up (like a print magazine)?
- Are you trying to break into a busy market or are you going to try
to establish a new format in a virgin market?
- How much financial backing will the venture have aside from actual
services provided by the partners?
- If a partner brings in customers - did you already establish how
much they'll be worth in your internal balance sheet? (And is the
partner in "Business Administration" maybe excluded, because that is
their job anyways?)
- Which services are actually paid for according to their usage and
which are paid for according to your percentage numbers?
I could name a few other things, but I think you get the picture. The
question requires a pretty individual answer by somebody who knows
about such things. Most of the numbers have to be estimates, so you
better ask somebody who's good at available combining data with an
educated guess.
But maybe I'm just too craven to answer a question like this with the
data currently available. ;)

Hello Voyager,
That's an eye opener for someone venturing into what you've been
through already and it sure is worth the amount of money if you would
clarify and structure a method of identifying the weights of the
contributions to arrive at a quantification policy for contribution on
a rough basis. :-)

Hello Voyager,
Sorry I missed your question about the site being already in business
or a startup. It's a start up.
