BACKGROUND
I'm looking for a light, portable laptop to do business both indoors
and outdoors. It must have an excellent large transflective screen so
I can use it in cafe's and (hopefully) at the beach. I must be able
to find and log into wireless hotspots, so the card should be
compatible with netstumbler or similar wardriving software. Good
battery life would be handy so I can take it out all day. A car
battery charger would be good also.

Thank you to the person who suggested the Mac. Unfortunately the mac
does not have a transmissive screen suitable for outdoors and is not
in the same league as the new generation of screens.

etc etc

The new XBRITE screens are a huge leap forward. Some people have said
'they are too reflective' however sadly they have just looked at one
in a shop and not used in in for everyday use. They make ordinary LCD
screens look like a joke. Pictures on my Sony HS94 screen are
indistinguishable from a beautiful full-gloss photo, and text is
defined with razor sharp precision.

If you put an Xbrite LCD next to a regular LCD you will be amazed. It
will take a few years for everyone to realize how amazing these new
screens are.

Basically, I'm after a list of models, from each laptop manufacturer,
that fit this bill. I have done a lot of research myself already, but
you may be able to find a laptop that is currently available or
soon-to-be-released that I have not found. The person who comes up
with the most comprehensive list of models that fit the bill has most
effectively answered my question.

I hope that clarifies.

The best laptop that fits your criteria is the Apple PowerBook G4 15".
Great battery life, beautiful screen, DVI output is standard, wireless
is standard, 512mb ram, 80gb hard drive, gigabit ethernet, fiber-optic
backlit keyboard, and a DVD+/-RW. ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with 64mb
of video RAM. All this for $2149 - it's a great laptop. Even if you're
unsure about Macs I would really recommend that you try it. It's
especially good if you're looking for a sexy laptop - I have an Apple
iBook, and people always comment on how cool it looks.

I think you'll want to look at Motion Computing's M1400 Tablet PC. A
transflective screen is a $350 option. I researched this out of
curiosity so I have no real recommendation. I would love to try it out
with all the options. You'll have to buy into the design concept for
more than casual use I think. An optional keyboard for serious
keyboarding and a case or stand for desktop use. And my opinion is
that handwriting recognition takes a disciplined hand and some
patience to master.

Its not on their web site yet but there is word of a project "Ninja"
that meets and exceeds most of your request. These laptops are made
for the outdoors and can take the abuse.
