Dear sainted,

According to the most up-to-date Consumer Expenditure Survey available
from the US Department of Labor, this was the average spending on
vehicle maintenance and repairs (excl. fuel) in the four regions of
the USA in 2000:

Northeast: $ 570.00

Midwest: $ 610.00

South: $ 584.00

West: $ 749.00

Nationwide Average: $ 628.25

This official data derives from the 2000 Consumer Expenditure Survey;
newer data has not been published yet.

Thanks, nearly exactly what I'm looking for. One more nuance: is this
per vehicle or house hold?

Dear sainted,

This data refers to 'Consumer Units', which is equivalent to an average household.

Dear sainted,

Just one more thing: I have just noticed that the direct links to the
survey data for the four regions do not work, since the data sheets
are generated especially for each query session. To check the
information, you would have to send the queries yourself from the data
query main page. I am very sorry for this inconvenience, caused by the
technical limitations of the Department's database system.

Regards,
