What exactly is your question? Are you trying to locate someone from
that battalion or want some information about that war?

Do let us know.

Thanks

I served with the 349th in Ft. Sill and in Germany during World War
II.
I have searched on-line for info regarding the 349th but can't find
out anything.
We were issued lapel pins with the crossed-cannon logo for artillery
and with the phrase, "On the way,Sir." I'd like to get a picture of
that pin.

I have not found the lapel pin you are seeking. However, I have found
some references to the the 349th Field Artillery, including contact
information for another member of the battalion. Would this be
sufficient for an answer?

I just realized from looking at your screen name that you might be the
same person whose contact information I have seen on the Internet. (I
don't know how to ask without revealing your real name, which you may
not want to do. Perhaps I can ask it this way -- did you live in
Illinois recently?)

If you are the same as this person, I should ask whether you would be
satisfied with the other information I have found.

I see that this question is almost expired. Would you like me to post
an answer with the references to the 349th that I have found?

I figured that I should give you the references that I have before the
question expires.

The 349th is mentioned in three chapters of a 1966 U.S. Army
publication entitled "The Employment of Negro Troops", by Ulysses Lee
( http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/books/wwii/11-4/ ). The information in
Chapter XXI is especially useful.

"Chapter III: The Negro Positions Defined"
http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/books/wwii/11-4/chapter3.htm (about
half-way down the web page, at p. 69)

"Chapter V: Units: The Quota Phase"
http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/books/wwii/11-4/chapter5.htm (about
half-way down the web page, at p. 125)

"Chapter XXI: Artillery And Armored Units In The ETO"
http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/books/wwii/11-4/chapter21.htm (between
one-third and half-way down the web page, at p. 657)

There is also a brief reference to the 349th in another military
publication entitled "African Americans in the U.S. Army During World
War II", by Robert F. Jefferson.

"8 African Americans in the U.S. Army During World War II"
https://www.denix.osd.mil/denix/Public/ES-Programs/Conservation/Legacy/AAME/aame4.html
(between half-way and two-thirds down the page)

Several other web pages mention the 349th, with respect to particular
soldiers:

"Omega Chapter: Brother Major Joseph Banks Bracy", The Sphinx Online,
Summer 1999
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
http://www.alphaphialpha.net/news/sphinx/sum99/Omega%20Chapter.html

"Woodrow L. Crockett: Class of 1939"
University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR)

"Press Briefing by Lt. General Claude Kicklighter, USA (Ret.), et
al.", May 2, 1995
The White House: Office of the Press Secretary
http://clinton6.nara.gov/1995/05/1995-05-02-briefing-on-world-war-ii-and-v-e-day-celebrations.html
(remarks by Colonel Woodrow Crockett, about half-way down the web
page)

"Guestbook Entries 16 (14 Feb to 3 May 99)", entry by Charles L.
Lewis, Apr. 25, 1999 (about one-eighth down the web page)

"A Galesburg Man at Utah Beach", by Mike Hobbs

I hope that this is helpful.

achucka-ga,

My husband,a native to the Fort Sill area, also served at Fort Sill,
reassigned to Korea and Europe. He gave me several excellent leads but
we found no real results, yet. My husband is sure the Fort Sill
Missle and Artillery Museum would have a pin, a replica of the pin, or
a picture. At his suggestion, I have written to the Fort Sill museum,
inquiring for you. I am posting a few links to look at OTHER insignias
and crests while we wait, hopefully for an answer! The Fort Sill site

crabcakes -

It sounds like you have a good connection to the topic, so I'd be
happy if you answered the question instead of me. I can just add a
brief comment afterwards about what I might have found in addition.

achuck,
The Ft. Sill Museum wrote back today with a scan of an insignia of the
349th. They do NOT have a pin, and I know the picture is NOT what you
are looking for....but I am posting it anyway. It is hard to read, but
I think you could enlarge it a bit...perhaps print it out and enlarge
it on a copier.
You can see it here
http://www.weboso.com/349th.bmp

I only wish I could have found the actual pin for you.
