NOTE: If ther eis a lien on the vehicle that you don't know about that
may complicate your situation. Regardless, this is the best route to
find out what if any liens are on the vehicle and if not, to get a new
title. You must have the vehicle insured in order to get a duplicate
title.
If there is no lien on the vehicle, you may obtain a duplicate title
at any Motor Vehicle Commission agency or Regional Service Center with
a proof of identity or by mailing the required documents and fees to
NJ Motor Vehicle Commission, Special Title Unit, PO Box 017, Trenton,
NJ 08666-0017.
In person or by mail, you must
* complete an application for a duplicate Certificate of Ownership
(ISM/SS-52) or call 888.486.3339 (toll free in New Jersey) or
609.292.6500 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. weekdays.
* present copies of a current registration or insurance ID card.
* pay a $25 fee payable to NJ Motor Vehicle Commission.
If a lien has been satisfied and you receive the title from the
lien-holder, you do not need a new title.
If a lien has been satisfied and you want a title without the lien
notation or if you never received the title from the lien-holder, the
owner must
* complete an application for a duplicate Certificate of Ownership
(ISM/SS-52) or call 888.486.3339 (toll free in New Jersey) or
609.292.6500 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. weekdays.
* show copies of a current registration or insurance ID card.
* pay a $25 fee payable to NJ Motor Vehicle Commission.
* show a letter or letters of release from the former lien-holder
to verify they do not have the title and that the lien has been
satisfied. This must be on the lien-holder's letterhead and include
the year, make and complete and accurate vehicle identification
number.
Mail the application (ISM/SS-52) and copies of the other required
documents and the fee to NJ Motor Vehicle Commission, Special Title
Unit, PO Box 017, Trenton, NJ 08666-0017.
