Hi there, I upgraded a existing computer with a new motherboard and hard drive, but kept the old drive in the machine also. I installed XP Home on the new 200gig drive. It installed smoothly and runs fine. I had Win98 on the old drive 13gig with quite a few programs, data, ect. I wanted to be able to run the programs either with 98 or xp. I can see the old drive under xp but most of the programs won't run. Some will though. Just wondering if you can configure to have a choice at boot up to boot to 98. Although, I can boot to the old hard drive by changing the bios settings, but there are lots of windows startup errors, naturally, because the drivers are old. I'm not even sure what kind of motherboard was in the old computer. If you could help me figure this out I would be grateful. I have read the help files in windows XP but with no solution. |

kredden, if you want to have a dual os menu, try re-install your windows xp while using your windows 98 but do not upgrade your win98, install it in other partition or hard drive, after you install winxp, try to reboot your pc, then you choose either of the 2 os you installed. By the way, regarding your problem in win98 drivers.. you can search or update at www.microsoft.com. i hope this comment can help you.. bmpaculan-ga |

You may also be able to run these programs from winxp depending on the install, and how much of a requirement the OS is. In XP there is an Windows OS emulator built in so you can run older programs under their intended OS. Simply right click the program, click properties, then select the Compatibility tab - next check the compatibility mode box and selct your desired OS from the drop down list. Here is a starting point on MS: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q217210 Also be sure that if you are using the same partition that it will need to be formated with FAT. You cant dual boot winxp and win98 on a NTFS file that is the same partition. -Phil |

Phil, I can see the 98 drive under winxp, but how do I get to the program to put it on my desktop to run it? I have read about the xp emulator but didn't know how to use it. If you could help me get most of these programs running, I would appreciate it. There are no older DOS programs, most are win95 and win98. I also forgot to add my version of XPhome is SP2 if that makes any difference. If this works, how do I pay you? |

Hey buddy, don't go through all those pains of immulaters and thing. Just do some research on internet about 'boot.ini' file and its possible configuration options. You can find this file in C drive of your computer and can be edited by double clicking it in the notepad. If you can not see it just go to folder options and make all OS as well as hidden files visible. boot.ini file, has settings which tells computer from which hard disk and from which partition to boot. So all you need is to add a line in that file about your second hard disk and maybe increase time out default option in that. Just do some research on internet and you will be able to do it. Do not install os agian or anything. Hope this helps. Take care, -Morphas. |
