Dear towercity-ga,
I have found a UK Christian research organisation:
Christian-Research.org, which publishes an annual report Christianity
in the UK. It includes detailed figures on church attendances. I
believe that this is the best and most authoritative source of
information. However, as I cannot find the exact figures, I need your
confirmation as to whether you accept this as an answer.

I have found a graph on their web site and although it does not have a
label or description, I believe it relates to church attendance
2003/2004 broken down into age groups. First, the site is frame based
and is not that well designed, the start page is
http://www.christian-research.org.uk/intro.htm

However, if you click on the following links you can view each page on its own.
This page has the graph
http://www.christian-research.org.uk/res.htm

This page has an extract from UKCH Religious Trends No. 4 2003/2004
which states that in 2005, 7% go to church in the UK. You will note
that this is, or is approximately, the number of the overall attendees
on the bar graph referred to above.
http://www.christian-research.org.uk/ans_1.htm

To confirm this and obtain the full details you would have to purchase
the book from them, cost £10.00.
Religious Trends No 4 2003 / 2004 by Peter Brierley
"This fourth book in the series covers the breadth of information now
expected from these volumes. As with previous editions, it provides
church statistics, but uniquely broken down by the four constituent
countries of the United Kingdom. Additionally there is a special
section on the results of the Scottish Church Census."

The figures for 1998 are:
1998
Under 15: 717,100
15 to 19: 210,600
20 to 29: 326,600
30 to 44: 646,700
45 to 64: 885,800
65 or over: 927,900
Total: 3,714,700
http://www.christian-research.org.uk/TideFig1.5.htm

Their research on Religious Trends is widely quoted but I cannot find
reference to this particular statistic.

Please let me know if this meets your needs.

Search strategy which finally led me to the site:
uk "church attendance" census
://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=uk+%22church+attendance%22+census&btnG=Google+Search&meta=
This gave a me site which referred to Christian-Research.org's
research publications, so I visited their web site.
