5. Lionel Caligor
Author of ?Parallel and reciprocal processes in
psychoanalytic supervision.?
Profession:
Pyschoanalyst, Training and Supervising Analyst, William Alanson White Institute
Therapeutic Orientation:
Freudian Analyis. Here are relevant excerpts from the history of the
White Institute (you may want to read more ? it?s interesting):
?[T]he White Institute has stood as the premier representative of the
?loyal opposition? to the psychoanalytic establishment in the United
States.?
. . .
?They formed an unusual alliance, based more on respect for freedom of
thought than unanimity of perspective. What they did agree on was a
humanistic concern to alleviate suffering, a fervent commitment to
psychoanalysis as a response to human pain, a pro_active political
stance toward redefining social structures to support individualism
and personal freedom, and an abiding interest in the manifold
interactions between individuals and their interpersonal environment.?
. . .
?But the heresy of our founders did not involve unraveling the
interwoven threads of analytic training. Candidates at White receive a
thorough grounding in the teachings of Freud and his followers, and
undergo an intensive experience of personal analysis and supervision,
requirements that parallel, and in some ways exceed those of the
American.?
6. Melanie Carr

Therapeutic Orientation/Research Interest:
Dr. Carr appears to have a more academic than therapeutic professional
orientation, and there is very little online information about her.
Indeed, it was very hard to find her full name. Her special interest
appears to be therapist/patient sexual relationships. Here is a quote
from another journal article that describes one aspect of her views on
the subject:
?Psychiatrists Melanie Carr and Gail Robinson wrote: "[W]omen are
often programmed to take responsibility for and feel guilty about
relationships and their problems. The almost universal expression of
guilt and shame expressed by women who have been sexually involved
with their therapists is a testament to the power of this
conditioning.?

Search Strategy:
My search strategy was identical to that I followed in answering your
other question. That is, using a variety of Google searches, I
determined the first names of the authors. I then used other Google
searches to match the full names with the works cited in your
questions.
Then, the hard part, I searched for information about their
?therapeutic approaches.? Almost all of the best sources for that
kind of information are in journal articles that are accessible online
only for a price or a
subscription. I did my best to piece together the most relevant
information on each author from available online sources by using
Google searches with terms that combined the author?s name with
various other terms.
Based on the similarities between this project and the other one I
performed for you, I am reasonably confident that the above
information will be useful to you. However, if anything is unclear,
please ask for clarification before rating the answer.
