Dear jkmcbrine,

and South Asia:

Sri Lanka - 9 men
Near East:

Iraq - 1 man
Israel - 38 men
Jordan - 22 men
Kuwait - 4300 men
Lebanon - 4 men
Oman - 560 men
Qatar - 72 men
Saudi Arabia - 4802 men
Syria - 6 men
United Arab Emirates - 207 men

This data derives from the U.S. Department of Defense's Defense
Almanac 2002 and represents the status of December 31, 2001. It might
have changed in the meantime; however, newer data has not been
published yet. And, with the operations in Afghanistan and a possible
additional armed conflict in Iraq in near future, it seems unlikely
that the Department of Defense will publish data containing actual
troop numbers in the region for 2002.
Please note also that, according to the source used the United States'
presence in Afghanistan was 9 men and 23 men in Pakistan respectively
in December 2001. These numbers are, of course, not appropriate
anymore. There are no exact figures, but according to a Fact Sheet of
the Department of Defense's Office of Public Affairs, there were
approx. 7000 US troops in Afghanistan in May 2002.
The number of US soldiers in Pakistan is around 1000 to 1100,
according to a USA Today article from May 30, 2002.
