Hello Mex14715-ga,

Yes, 112 Ocean avenue is still standing in Amityville, Long Island,
however, the address has been changed to stop the flocks of tourists.

While the DeFeo murders are true, the Lutz family stories are debatable.

DeFeo:
?Butch DeFeo, 47, is currently serving six consecutive life sentences
at Greenhaven Penitentiary in Stormville, New York.?

However, the Lutz story is a bit different, stories range from it
being true, to them concocting the story for money, to get a book, and
get a movie deal. They contacted at least 2 publishers to get the book
going, and was sued by a priest that was falsely depicted in the
story, saying the role they said he had and was ?true? was not
correct.

?Families have lived happily in the Amityville house (its address now
changed to deter the flocks of curious sightseers) since the Lutzes
moved out without being bothered by a single demon or ghost. The
citizens of Amityville often tell tourists that the house has been
torn down, frustrated that a ghost story has overshadowed a tragedy ?
the brutal murders of six members of the DeFeo family, the true horror
of Amityville.?
Source: http://md.essortment.com/trueamityville_rjlk.htm

?In the end, this tale of horror and demonic possession was debunked
by the Catholic Diocese of Rockville Center, the Amityville Police
Department, William Weber (Butch DeFeo?s defense attorney), U.S.
District Court Judge Jack Weinstein, and even George and Kathy Lutz,
who ended up recanting certain parts of the tale. The new owners of
112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville were disturbed by no other visitors
than the hordes of curious onlookers, and those convinced that theirs
was a haunted house. This entire fabrication detracted from what was
in fact the true horror of Amityville, the cold-blooded murder of six
innocent people by one of their own family members.?

When the book first came out I read it in only two days. Then I heard
that the Lutz's were being sued by (I forget who). Under oath in court
They (the Lutz's) admitted that they made the whole story up. I
remember this very clearly because I was very upset for being "fooled"
into buying the book.

As a teenager I found the book spine tingling and very scary. I don't
care that it was untrue, I bought a horror-book and I was 'horrified'
good and proper. Well worth the $3.95.

The Lutzes have never denied the haunting taking place, George still
swears it is the truth to this day.
It's still a good book though, just a shame that thousands of people
were duped into believing it was true. Even Chris (Kathy's son)has
denied that some of the things happened. I guess we will never know
for definite, but i don't think there was any haunting at the house.
The only tragedy was that the DeFeo's were killed
