Everytime I boot up I get the following error message: Error loading
p2esocks_1032.dll - The specified module can not be found. I click
"OK" and it goes away. Should I be concerned about this missing
module? Ifo so, what do I do? If not, how can I stop this message from
appearing?

Howdy mark800-ga,

As this is a diagnostic process, I will run through it with you and make
sure it works before posting this as an answer.

First, close all browsers and program that you are running. Next, go to
Start, then click on Run. A window will open and in the Open: area type
in: regedit

Once you type in the above, click on the OK button and the Registry Editor
window will open for you.

The editor has a tree structure, that is, a list of areas with "plus" signs
next to them. You will will want to click on the plus signs to
navigate this menu. Safety first, so let's back up your current
registry. Click on File
and then Export. Name the file somehing you will remember (p2esocks or
something) and save it someplace you will not forget, such as "My Documents."

Now, click on plus signs next to following areas in this order:
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER
- Software
- Microsoft
- Windows
- CurrentVersion
- Click on the Run folder

In the right hand window of the Registry Editor, locate and delete any of the
following by clicking on them once, then go to Edit and click on Delete.

mslagent - C:\WINDOWS\mslagent\mslagent.exe
Instant Access - rundll32.exe p2esocks_1032.dll,InstantAccess

On your machine, the exact wording might vary from the above, but essentially
look for and delete any instance of "mslagent" and/or any instance of "Instant
Access" in the "Name" area and with "p2esocks..." in the "Data" area.

Reboot into safe mode (press your F8 key right after the memory check) and
select "Safe Mode" from the boot menu. The screen it boots into might look
different than what you are used to, but don't worry.

Go to "My Computer" than go to your "C" drive, then the "Window" folder.

Click on Tools at the top, then Folder Options. Click on the View tab, then
click on "Show hidden files or folders" and make sure "Hide extensions for
known file types" is unchecked. Click on "Apply" then OK."

In the Windows folder, locate a folder name "mslagent" and open it. Delete
the file named: mslagent.exe

Reboot as you normally would, and that should eliminate the error message.

Please do the above and report back the results. If you have any questions,
please feel free to ask. Thanks!

Hi!!

The error message is probably a remanent that results of a previous
virus, trojan and/or other pestware infection. In order to give you a
more accurate answer please post a HijackThis log:
To download it:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

You can find HijackThis tutorial in the following page:
"Bleeping Computer - HijackThis Tutorial - How to use HijackThis to
remove Browser Hijackers & Spyware":
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=42

What we need if that you post a HijackThis log here, so run HijackThis
and let it scan your computer, then WITHOUT fixing anything generate a
log and post it here as a clarification. With this info I will be able
to help you. Follow the instructions on this part of the tutorial:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=42#HowToUse

I will wait for your response.

Regards.

denco thanks for the response. I want to see what livioflores thinks
of the logfile I create at his suggestion before I try your method.
Note: I do have Spybot and AdAware instaled and run them both every
week and still get the error. Here is the logfile:

Request for Question Clarification by denco-ga on 25 Apr 2005 12:29 PDT
Not a problem mark800-ga,

From your HijackThis log, here is the line that is causing the problem:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Instant Access] rundll32.exe p2esocks_1032.dll,InstantAccess

The set of instructions that I originally posted should clear this problem.

Clarification of Question by mark800-ga on 25 Apr 2005 20:07 PDT
denco - I followed the steps - very easy ! Error message is gone,
everything else seems normal (I did go back and restore the default
view for file types), but the taskbar on desktop is now Grey and
slightly larger than it was before. I rebooted twice - no change.
Also, i tried switching between the classic and XP versions - no luck
(btw I like the classic better). One note... I did not find the file
mslagent.exe - the only .exe file was named slightly different but I
deleted it anyway. I just went back to see if it was recreated - I did
not see any .exe files in the MSLAGENT folder. Any ideas??

Clarification of Question by mark800-ga on 25 Apr 2005 20:44 PDT
denco - I did a system restore and then went back adn just did the
first part of your process and deleted the "instant access" file. The
message is gone and the taskbar is back to normal. Go ahead and post
as an answer to close this question out. Thanks.

Howdy mark800-ga,

Appreciate you accepting this as the answer to your question.

The following procedure was sourced from this University of Hertfordshire
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences (FEIS) Technical Forum
posting titled "Removing error at startup p2esocks-10**.dll."
http://forums.feis.herts.ac.uk/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=656

I reworded the essential information into a more "user friendly" format.

First, close all browsers and programs that you might be running. Next, go
to Start, then click on Run. A window will open and in the Open: area type
in: regedit

Once you type in the above, click on the OK button and the Registry Editor
window will open for you.

The editor has a tree structure, that is, a list of areas with "plus" signs
next to them. You will want to click on the plus signs to navigate this
menu. Safety first, so let's back up your current registry.

I suspect you deleted a file named "msagent" which indeed was not a good
thing to do, as you found out. Glad you got it all sorted out. I also
suspect that one of your various "cleaner" programs cleared out the mslagent
file along the way at some point, hence the missing file.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Thanks!

Well one simple solution that people often overlook that may help is,
it could be adware or spyware that runs in the background of your
computer and needs that dll to run, and somehow it got deleted or
relocated. Theres really nothing concerning about the error message,
it sounds like its trying to load a program and that dll is missing so
its telling you that it cant be found and wont load. If you have a
spyware or adware software use it after the next couple steps, if you
dont search the internet for a good one. i would recommend "spybot -
search and destroy" (a link to download is at bottom of page). Your
first step is to do a simple standard scan disk. reboot your computer
and make sure you still have the error message, if so, run the spybot
program and do a complete search that may take a while. delete all of
the items it prompts and reboot your computer. This is the most common
way to see what this thing may be, and it might work. best of luck.

Hmm - that's wierd. Looks like the google "researcher"
cough-borrowed-cough solentechnologies statement. I feel this is an
issue since people as commenters have no real say in getting the
answers since the researchers pull off what they just did here. ~Sigh,
oh well maybe someday we will all be researchers. :D - GLoRiFieD

The source for my post, which I will include with my answer if it is
accepted as such, was this University of Hertfordshire Faculty of

In addition to the information that I garnered there (also known as
research) I reworded the essential information into a more "user
friendly" format, instead of:

"delete the following entries: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\windows\..."
