Question ID: 513533
Breast implants: How many women in the US get breast implants every
year? What percentage are as a result of a mastectomy rather than
just to enhance what Mother Nature provided?

I am a biomedical engineering student involved in some significant
research in this area, and want to help. I need to know the total
number of implants, as that will effect funding of my project - and
also want to know about those who are post mastectomy for design
development issues.

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi Crystal4290!

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), there
were nearly 255,000 breast enhancement implant surgeries in 2003,
nearly twice the number done in 1998. Another 68,000 women received
breast implants for reconstruction following mastectomy due to cancer
or other disease.

According to a research article published on December 23, 2004,
approximately 20% of breast implants are used for reconstruction in
breast cancer patients following mastectomy.

Excerpt:

?Over the past 30 years, an estimated 1.5?2 million women have
received breast implants in the United States. Starting in the 1980s,
widespread public health concern arose regarding their potential
adverse health effects. Numerous epidemiologic investigations have
focused on systemic complications, particularly cancer and connective
tissue disease, but have found no significantly increased short-term
risk for these diseases.

Nearly 79000 breast reconstruction procedures following mastectomy
were performed last year.?

?An article released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons
states that: More than 180,000 women in the United States will be
diagnosed with breast cancer this year, many of whom will have
mastectomies. Nearly 79,000 breast reconstruction procedures following
mastectomy were performed last year, a 166 percent increase since
1992, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS.)?

?Nevertheless, more than 200,000 women in the US alone receive
implants every year for cosmetic breast augmentation, and 80,000 will
get implants for reconstruction (as a result of breast surgery or
other medical reasons).?
