Question ID: 513642
I have a dedicated Linux server running under Fedora 3. I am a
beginner with Linux and I would like to use the complete Fedora core
distribution. (GUI with KDE). But because I have not installed the OS
myself, I have only a minimal installation (command line).
I managed to install KDE by running
yum -y groupinstall KDE

When I try to to start KDE, I enter
 startx

but I obtain an error message.

It seems that there is no configuration on my server.
From what I read, FC3 does not use XFree86 for configuration but xorg.
It seems that there is no file for configuration on my server. (xorg or Xfree86)
I think I can t start KDE because of the missing files (config files)
I am contact the server using ssh from Windows XP with Putty.

Please help. (I need details explanations as I am beginning with Linux
commands and processes).

i believe it is failing for 2 reasons
1. you dont have a program listening for X commands on your XP machine
2. startx should only be used on local displays

follow this URL for info: http://www.ece.uvic.ca/computing/win-xsessions.shtml

once you have an X-client installed on XP try typing in "xterm&" with
out the quotes and if its working an xterm window should show up in
the X-client
