Hi doctorchou2,
I'm sorry to hear about the problem with your account. I was wondering
what had happened to you. :-)
I've gone through the emails I received regarding your inquiry and
will post them in chronological order for a clear understanding of the
exchanges I have had with my sources.
After contacting the ASA with your inquiry, I received the following responses:
Here's the 1st reply:
"Your request was forwarded to our Communications Department on
February 8, 2005. I am sorry that no one apparently responded to your
request. The ASA does not sponsor any scholarships grants or
stipends.
If you are a resident doctor in Anesthesiology the Anesthesia
Foundation does make loans available to ASA resident members. If you
are looking for a research grant then the Foundation for Anesthesia
Education and Research reviews acceptable research and then issues
grants to the applicant. You can contact the FAER at (507)266-6866 and
inquire about these research grants."

Here's another reply. (I emailed the inquiry to various people at the
ASA to ensure a response):
"Thank you for contacting the American Society of Anesthesiologists
(ASA). I apologize if your first inquiry was not answered, but this
e-mail was forwarded to my attention as ASA Assistant Executive
Director.
ASA itself does not award or fund grants, scholarships or stipends for
anesthesiology residents. Other than the individual residency
programs, the only other organization that offers such funding, to my
knowledge,
is the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research: http://www.faer.org/
I have taken the liberty of forwarding your inquiry to Mr. Tom
Bruckman, Executive Director of FAER, for his review and possible
response or referral."
Sincerely,
Denise M. Jones
Assistant Executive Director
American Society of Anesthesiologists

=====================================
I then received an email from Mr. Tom Bruckman, Executive Director of
FAER, after he was forwarded the message from the ASA (as noted
above). Here is his response:
"Thanks for the inquiry - I believe you're seeking information on the
FAER Anesthesiology Residency Program. This program provides grants to
allow Residents to attend the ASA Annual Meeting.
Please visit http://www.faer.org/residents.php for additional information.
If this is not what you're looking for, please provide additional info
and we will see if we can help."
Best regards,
Tom
I sent the following email for additional information:
"Is there any way an individual can apply to this program or are they
only nominated by the Department Chairs of their institutions? If
there is a way, can you please outline the procedure."
Mr. Bruckman's reply to my email:
"The program is designed to allow Department Chairs to nominate
individuals and less than half of the Department Chairs can
participate in any one year. We try to rotate the offering among the
Departments across the country.
Unfortunately, individuals can not nominate themselves. Perhaps
bringing the opportunity to the attention of your Department Chair
would be helpful.
Good luck, thanks for the interest."
Tom
I hope the information in the above exchanges is helpful. If you have
any questions regarding my answer please don?t hesitate to ask before
rating it.
Best regards,
