I'm looking for a list of US colleges ranked in order of the number of
students living in on-campus housing.

I would like this list to include both the gross number of students
living in that on-campus housing, as well as the percentage of the
total student population for that university.

This list should be limited to coed 4-year universities (exclude
community colleges, junior colleges, and vocational schools)

It's probably possible to create a list of the type of colleges you
mentioned ranked by total enrollment. But I'm not aware of any
resources that would allow a ranking based on the number of students
in on-campus housing.

Is the total enrollment option of interest to you?

Thanks, but I already have a list of US colleges ranked by total
enrollment. Am trying to refine that list to give me a better
understanding of the population density of students in the immediate
area. I thought looking at on-campus housing would be one way to
figure that out.

Take a look at this:

http://factfinder.census.gov/servlet/GCTTable?_bm=y&-geo_id=D&-ds_name=D&-_lang=en&-mt_name=DEC_2000_SF4_U_GCTP11_ST7

and the colum labelled:

Population
18 to 24
years--
Percent enrolled in college or
graduate school

Is that useful at all?

Interesting, but not specific enough to be helpful in solving my
problem, I don't think. To test this, I just looked at two of the
highest values under that column in Alabama, and found that neither of
the two corresponding towns was within 20 miles of a college.

Would it be simpler to look at available on-campus units, rather than
looking for actual number of residents? For example, is it possible
to find the ratio of total on-campus beds to total enrollment? Is
there a college search site that lists this info (I haven't found one,
but am under impression you -ga researchers have magic powers...)
