Question ID: 514331
This is a UK specific question only. I have written a book "The NHS IT
Project: The Biggest Computer Programme in the World Ever!" and in the
UK we are expected to spend £30-50 BILLION in the next 10 years on
computers in the NHS.
A lot of money - Yes, but the NHS is very big and complex and my question is
"What does the NHS spend each year on various items including Tea
Bags; Toilet Rolls; disinfectant;Staff costs; Bread; paper towels;baked beans;
potatoes; eggs;etc etc.
I need to have access to this kind of information for when someone
says "£30Billion is a lot of money to spend on computers!"
I can say "Yes but £24 Million is a lot to spend on Tea Bags!"

Thanks

Dear walterrooner-ga,
I do not think that you will obtain such detailed information. Each
Strategic Health Authority, NHS Trust, Primary Care Trust, etc.,
prepare and publish their own accounts. There are over 500 of these.

For instance, these are just some of them in England.
"28 Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs);
275 NHS Trusts in England;
304 Primary Care Trusts in England (PCTs); and
320 funds held on trust by the Strategic Health Authorities, NHS
Trusts, Primary Care Trusts, Special Health Authorities (SpHAs),
Section 11 Trustees and Special Trustees."

The National Audit Office audits all these accounts and their 587 page
report summarizes their contents. You may find it of some interest.

Yes I think you may be right.....that there isn't a single source of
information re NHS spend.
The info included on NAO reports/audits is generally high level and
not detailed enough.
