I got a new Logitech mouse (old one broke when dropped). new mouse is
an exact replacement of the broken one. I tried to install Logitech
Set Point software on my computer yesterday (WIN XP Pro desktop). I
didn't know it, but the software was already on the computer - I
forgot it was on as I don't really use custom features of the mouse
except the scroll wheel (side to side feature). Anyway, something went
wrong - the Set Point software won't launch and I can't add/remove
programs it (I get this error: InstallShield (R) Setup Launcher has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience.) I called Logitech support and tried their suggestion -
system restore - no luck. Actually I was put on hold then after a
while the line went dead! I probably shouldn't have, but I went into
the programs folder and deleted the Logitech folder (it's still in my
recycle bin) and tried Add/remove again - no luck. Now the file size
is showing .96 megs not 23 as before I deleted the program folder.
Also, I did try several restore points and I tried reloading the
software and I did search the CD for an uninstall utility - no luck.
My question: How do I get the remenants of Logitech Set Point off and
get a new working version on? (note: the CD works fine - I just loaded
it on my laptop with no issues. I need some step by step info. Please
don't close the question until I reply that the problem is solved. |

Howdy mark800-ga,
Back to a diagnostic process. Please try the following first.
- Go to Start, then Settings, then Control Panel and then System
- Click on the Hardware tab, then Device Manager
- Click the plus sign next to Human Interface Devices
- Click once on the Logitech mouse entry
- Go to Action on the top, then click on Uninstall
- Click on OK, etc. to get to your desktop
- Reboot your computer and see if it prompts you to reinstall your software

No luck with the process you described. It recognized the mouse on
start up as it is a USB device and will work without the software (but
i can't program buttons etc.) I tried reloading the software anyway
and it went through the motions but it didn't install.

Howdy mark800-ga,
Please the following then.
Go to Start, Run and type in regedit and click on OK.
Please to the following location, if it exists.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Logitech\
See what folders might appear in there and see what programs, etc. that
might be referenced in those, and report those back here please. Thanks!

Aplologies this is taking so long, but we want to be conservative in the
registry work. As the problem appears to be with SetPoint, we will start
with that section. If you would, please click on each folder (and any
subfolders that might be contained in the folders) below, then look at
the window that is on the right in the Registry Editor.
You will want to look for drivers (.dll files) that are listed and their
pathnames, such as C:\Windows\... (but not limited to just the Windows
directory) and all pathnames, such as C:\ ... that will appear in the
Data column. The pathname might appear as a "SystemRoot" entry.
Post the findings back here please. Thanks!
