Hi, I have a kind of complicated problem. I was a J1-visa holder but the two year rule will expire in 4 month. I was living in Germany the whole time and travling back and forth (visa-waiver)to the US to see my boyfriend. This time my boyfriend asked me to marry him and we did. I have the grant that it was spontaneous because I have my flight back ticket with me. So now I have several questions. 1. What are the next steps required so that I can work in the US and travel to Germany? 2.I already have a Social Security Number and an american drivers license (since I had a J1-visa) does this mean that I can apply for work as soon as I have my marriage licence? 3.I have to go back to Germany twice until August because I have to write examinations at my university. My Husband is in the military and I will be getting an military ID-card. Can I just come back to the states showing them that ID-card at the immigration. I know that you are not allowed to leave the US when you are applying for status change. How does that work for me since I have the Military-ID? 4.As mentioned my Husband is military does that make any differens to all the procedures that I will have to go through? 5.Is there any Service available that can help me with all the paperwork? |

Yes, there is a service that can help you: US Citizenship and Immigration Service http://uscis.gov/graphics/ It really is a service-oriented site, has the true information and is easy to read, and all the information is there, somewhere, but I cannot promise it will tell you that it is easy. But you have a little time and still valid visa, so you should be able to do what is necessary. Check out both sides: wedded to a US citizen and also wife of a military person. The latter is more concerned with soldiers who have married overseas, but it could apply in your case. PLEASE NOTE: as the disclaimer below points out, this is no professional or legal advice. Good luck |
