In the new Windows Media Player 10, there are expandable lists on the
left hand side for: Album Artist, Contributing Artist, Composer,
Album, Genre, Year Released, etc. I would like to add "Artist" as an
additional expandable menu and remove "Album Artist". The reason, I
just want to see "Artists" I don't care about the "Album Artists".

simple, the gray tool bar that displays the artist, name, ect. right
click it, and you can remove or add anything you want.
