Hi, I booked a flight on US Airways through, the details are shown below: Going: Airline Logo Flight/Class: US Airways flight 518/Class V Depart: Seattle/Tacoma, WA (SEA) - June 19 at 10:10pm Arrive: Charlotte, NC (CLT) - June 20 at 5:50am Connecting To Airline Logo Flight/Class: US Airways flight 1429/Class V Depart: Charlotte, NC (CLT) - June 20 at 9:25am Arrive: Cancun, Mexico (CUN) - June 20 at 11:09am Return: Airline Logo Flight/Class: US Airways flight 750/Class V Depart: Cancun, Mexico (CUN) - June 28 at 2:00pm Arrive: Charlotte, NC (CLT) - June 28 at 5:49pm Connecting To Airline Logo Flight/Class: US Airways flight 59/Class V Depart: Charlotte, NC (CLT) - June 28 at 7:30pm Arrive: Seattle/Tacoma, WA (SEA) - June 28 at 9:56pm I am worried about US Airways going bankrupt. I was wondering if there are any flights that I can get from Vancouver to Cancun or from Seattle to Cancun which are 100% refundable which I can buy as a backup plan. It looks like some of Continental's flights from Vancouver to Cancun are refundable, but I have difficulty figuring out the rules and it is confusing since there are 3 legs to some of these flights and different conditions for each leg. I think the most restrictive conditions on one leg apply to the whole flight. The flights from Vancouver to Cancun with stopover in Seattle don't seem to be refundable but the ones which go directly from Vancouver to Houston are. I have been looking on http://www.travelocity.ca and http://www.expedia.ca -We (2 persons) need to leave on Sunday late afternoon or evening from Vancouver, or evening from Seattle on the 19th of June. -We (2 persons) need to leave Cancun preferably as late as possible, but still arriving to Vancouver or Seattle on the 28th of June. Thanks. |

You don't have to worry about USAirways GOING bankrupt. They already ARE bankrupt. They are operating under protection of the bankruptcy court. They are currently restructuring their finances in the hopes of emerging from bankruptcy. What you should be concerned about is that they cease operations because they can no longer operate even under protection. However, in your time frame (June), there is nothing really to worry about. They are secure through June and probably well beyond. I would book a backup if your travel plans were later in the year, but you should be fine. |

Thanks for your comment. (Sorry this is my first time on Google Answers getting any response so I apologize if I don't really know what I am doing). I realize that Chapter 11 is not bankrupcy/liquidation/or ceasing operations. It is court-ordered protection from prime lenders for reorganization/restructuring. I was worried that they might actually have to pull the plug before June 28th (which is the date of my return flight home). Your advice is comforting. If you don't mind, can you tell me what your background is and what makes you confident in them surviving past June? |

I have been closely following the status of USAirways for several months as I have a large number of dividend miles with them that I have yet to claim, and I also have a couple of trips booked for later in the year. The next financing deadline coming up for them is June 30, so they have financing and agreements currently in place to operate until at least June 30, which is why you are safe. You can go to www.google.com and hit the "News" link and then search for articles on USAirways bankruptcy to confirm this. On the other hand, I have a trip booked on USAirways to Cancun in November which is a lot less certain for them, so I have a backup reservation on American. |

Thanks for the help. I've also been closely following through Google News! Is your backup flight refundable? |

Actually, my backup flight is not even paid for. American is offering a deal now, through certain travel agents, that they will hold seats for you at the current price that you do not have to pay for until 30 days before the flight as a backup to USAirways. American is obviously trying to become the carrier of choice for USAirways customers if the airline were to cease operations. |
