Hi severisth-ga,
I upgraded to Trillian Pro a while back, and I wouldn't go back for
the world. Anyway, you should have access to all the emoticons in
Trillan Basic. For example, go here:
http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/features/index.php?select=8 and look at
the screenshot. See how it has all the emoticons in 1 place for all
the messengers and windows. Just click on a buddies name, and click on
the smiley face right above the box where you type.
Google Search: Trillian

If this answer requires further explanation, please request
clarification before rating it, and I'll be happy to look into this
further.

What will the smilies look like from the end of the people I'm
messaging? If I send a basic smilie :) through Trillian, will it look
like Trillian's or like MSN's on the recipient's screen?

I have found you have 1 of 2 options in this situation.
If you use the MSN compatiable ones with MSN, they show up exactly as
MSN's would. However if you use one that is not messenger specific, it
may just show up as the word code for that emoticon.
For example:
In "Extra Objects" there is a duck, it's code word is (duck). If I
send it to someone with Trillian, they see a duck, if not, they just
see the word (duck).
Same with the different messengers. Each messenger in Trillian has
it's own account that works with the "original" messengers servers
(AOL, MSN, Yahoo, etc.) So, say I was on MSN, and tried to send
someone a Yahoo compatiable emoticon, like the monkey face, instead of
the cute picture, since they (the original servers) can't/don't
communicate, they only see the "code" for it, which is a frown - then
a vertical line - then a ). You would have to get each provider to
acknowledge all others emoticons, and I dount that will ever happen.
Your best bet is to convince all your friends to use Trillain, then
they could see all of the emoticons, no matter what the "original"
provider was, cause Trillian recognizes all the codes no matter which
messenger it's coming from.

Hmm, it sounds like Trillian doesn't *quite* do what I was hoping,
which was to be able to use emoticons from the various IM programs.
For instance, Yahoo has a great "batting eyes" emoticon (the old one
was better than their latest rendition of it IMO). On the other hand,
MSN has this great "nerd" emoticon. I'd like to be able to send people
either one of those.
I know it can actually be done in MSN, because MSN allows you to put
in custom emoticons, and then when you send that emoticon to a friend,
it actually downloads the image to their computer and displays it in
*their* chat window. Very cool!
I had hoped Trillian would automate that process for me (I'm idealistic) :)
If you wouldn't mind just finding me a link with instructions for
adding an animated emoticon to MSN, I'd be more than happy with your
answer. Hope that's fair!
Cheers,
Severisth

Hi again,
Here's a step by step tutorial for adding emoticons into MSN that you
have downloaded. It lets you make a keyboard shortcut and name them
also.
