I own an HP Pavilion a750y that runs windows XP.

The HP comes with a DVD writer/ cd-writer combo; this is one disc
drive that both writes DVDs and CDs.

About a month ago I put a blank CD into the drive to burn some music.
When I put the cd into the drive the computer did not recognize it.
Worse, the drive did not respond to eject commands.

Blank cds from the same spindle when put into my brother?s Apple
laptop had similar effects.

In both cases, we had to manually eject the disc (paper clip through the hole).

However, my drive no longer works.

I?ve tried restarting the computer and updating the drivers, but to no luck.

It now is at a point where I can press the eject button and the drawer
comes out, but the drive no longer reads the disks.

I know the cd was blank and did not contain a virus, I think the cd
was just defective.

Is this a known bug?

I am seeking step by step instructions to fix my drive so I can use it
like I did before.

Have you removed the device from the Device Manager and then
restarted? This will allow Windows to recognize the drive as a new
device and reinstall drivers for it. Sometimes this works when just
updating the drivers doesn't. Right-click on "My Computer" and go to
the hardware tab to find the device manager.

Yes, I have tried that before, but with no luck. The computer finds
it, but still the drive dosn't read disks.
