I live in St. Augustine, FL, the oldest city in the United States. Or,
to purists, the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in
the United States (in deference to a couple of New Mexican pueblos
that are 500 years older). Needless to say, historic preservation is a
big and perennial issue here. What I seek is a web site(s) that
describes the preservation programs in other historic cities like
Savannah and Charleston, or, even better, a site that ranks all such
cities by the success of their preservation programs.

Pink, that's a helpful site, though the ranking (or an assessment of
relative merit among historic cities) component is more important to
me.

Hello nautico-ga,

The History Channel has a yearly Save Our History Award "to honor
communities and classrooms demonstrating an outstanding commitment to
history education and preservation of local history." The deadline
for submitting applications for the 2005 awards just closed. Tampa
Preservation, Inc. was the 2004 Community Award winner. You might also

Historic Trust for Preservation.

I've also found some sites that rank best city or state preservations
programs but nothing at the national level.

Would any of these meet your needs?

Hello nautico-ga,

As I said in my earlier clarification, I don?t think there is a Web
site that ranks municipal historical preservation programs. On the
other hand, there is lots of information available about organizations
dedicated to historical preservation. There are also some government
agencies that provide assistance in this field. I?ve included a
starter kit of links to give you a good picture of the breadth of
resources available. Many of the organizations and agencies I?ve found
also give yearly awards. I?ve included some links to help you review
what?s involved with these.

I hope that the links I?ve provided with give you the resources you
need to help you evaluate St. Augustine?s historical preservation
projects and efforts in comparison to other cities.

All the best.
