I have approx. 300 clients which I have to rename. Is there a why to use
Active Directory (GPO) or a remote CMD prompt ect... with out
contacting and/or disturbing the user? I need to do this from a central
point (such as my workstation) as all the clients are located in
various locations.

Thanks for the responce, this looks like it will work. I will except
this as an answer. however is there a way to notify the user that his
computer will reboot so he can close apps.?
80% of the workstation are 2000 or XP and 20% are NT.

I am assuming since you're using GP and mentioning AD that the
machines are either windows 2000 or XP. See below for some microsoft
kb articles on the netdom.exe utility. You will be able to use it to
rename computers remotely.

here's a specific article on renaming computers with this utility:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;298593&sd=tech

Here's the actual search I did at microsoft for netdom:

Hope this helps!!!
