I've found only one source, which cannot be verified, on the possible
owner of the painting. Would you like to have it anyway?

Clarification of Question by johnstri-ga on 30 Apr 2005 08:31 PDT
I would like any information beyond the liner notes that can lead me
to current ownership. By this i mean any ownership information except
Frandsen De Schonberg or Emile. Thank you

According to a comment in Google Groups, the original painting of the
Layla cover was hanging in George Harrison?s recording studio, so the
owner of the painting would belong to George Harrison?s estate and
his widow.

?Well, the friendship seems to have lasted, since the two have performed
together since then. I also remember a WNEW-FM (New York) d-j talking about
walking into George's recording studio, and hanging right outside was the
original painting for the Layla cover. George told the d-j that Eric had
given it to him.?

Does this help?

Johnstri,

I found another possible lead.

A Spanish webpage dedicated to album cover art states that the
painting belonged to Bruce McCaskill.

?Tapa disco "Layla and other assorted love songs" de Derek and the dominos.
AÑO: 1970, AUTOR: Frandsen-de Schonberg,
DATO: Era un cuadro de la casa de Bruce McCaskill, en dónde se la
pasaban ensayando.?

Here is the translation of the above information:

Album Cover: "Layla and other assorted love songs" by Derek and the Dominos.
Year: 1970, AUTHOR: Frandsen-de Schonberg,
Note: It was a painting from Bruce McCaskill?s home, where they were rehearsing.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Dear Bobbie 7
This may be helpful. The McCaskil lead is just a mis-translation. he
was the roadie.
I will follow up on the other lead and if it is a true lead I will
certainly pay you even if it doesnot pay out.

As for all others please stop researching at this time. Thank you all.

Dear Nancylynn-ga,
Thank you for the Hello lead, but I doubt it will pan out as months
before the Pattie Boyd show I contacted SFAE asking for any
information. i again contacted them after the show. they are so
disorganized and were not helpful. i bought art from them in the past
but due to their total disorganization i decided not to even buy
multiple photos from PB's show. I too tried contact her agent in
england to buy the photos i wanted but to no avail. SFAE is pretty
flaky. BTW i live in SF.

I have e-mailed the english lawyer of the estate, but have not heard
from him yet. please be patient. If he says that he has the painting i
will compensate you for your efforts regardless of whether it will be
for sale. you will know as soon as i hear. thank you again.

Dear Bobbie 7
The attorney just replied that the estate does not own this painting
and he refered me to EC's attorney. If this does not lead anywhere, i
think we should call it a day.

This may be helpful:

"Frandsen De Schonberg is the French artist who painted the picture
used for the album cover. The band was staying with his son, Emile,
when Clapton met the bell bottom princess."

http://www.songfacts.com/detail.lasso?id=18

"The Layla liner notes contain "Cover painting by Frandsen De
Schonberg with thanks to his son Emile for the abuse of his house."

http://www.coastweb.de/ftp/slowhand/text_info/faq.txt

"The original idea was to issue an album as the pseudononymous "Derek
and the Dominos," packaged in a cover (depicting a female figure by
painter Frandsen-de Schonberg that, in retrospect, looks quite a bit
like Boyd) devoid of any other info."

Thank you but I have the information posted as it is in the liner
notes of the album since 1971. What I am trying to see is if anyone
can help me find the current owner. Thank you.

Here's one possible lead -- but I'm not sure how good it is.

Pattie Boyd, the former-model-turned-photograhper, and the great
beauty who inspired "Layla," has a copy of the painting in her London
townhouse, or at least she did as of 1992. But I'm not sure if it's
the original painting or a copy.

You can see it for yourself if you can get your hands on a copy of the
July 11, 1992, issue of Hello! magazine. (Vol. 210.) There is a photo
of Boyd with the Layla painting behind her on page 5. (You can often
find copies of Hello! at eBay.)

You may be able to contact Ms. Boyd via the San Francisco Art
Exchange, which recently held an exhibit of her photographs.

See:

Unfortunately, I can't find an agent for Boyd, who famously does her
best to stay far out of the spotlight. So, contacting the SFAE may be
your only means of contacting her, or contacting someone close enough
to her who can possibly verify if the copy she owns is the original.
