What you are asking is probably impossible to find out - at least in
terms of an accurate number (or near accurate estimate). I suspect you
are asking your question as an approach to something else. What
exactly are you hoping to achieve and maybe we can help you do it in
some other, more practical fashion?

I knew this would be difficult and like you say maybe impossible to
get accurate statistics. I'm at work right now and will have to think
about your suggestion a bit and reply later. Perhaps tonight.

Very well. I will check back. It might help to know what you are
working toward and we might be able to figure out a better course of
research to help you get there.

I'm trying to find out how many people, what perceentage of Americans,
would watch a show with that as the topic. I'm open for suggestions
and other approaches that will give me that answer.

Hmm. As I suspected your question is not about "How many television
shows were broadcast in the US in 2004 on the topic" but a matter of
marketing demographics. As you probably know marketing questions such
as yours typically costs thousands of dollars to answer and are
normally done only by marketing agencies that have done studies in
that area.

If I may give you some advice, your question about "alcohol and drugs"
is far too broad to have been answered. Virtually every show nowadays
has something to do with these topics either directly or indirectly.
That's how saturated our society is with these issues. Having said
that, in my opinion it's not a matter of how many people would sit
down to watch a show with the topics you mentioned but how many people
would be watching TV "AT ALL" during a specific time slot that the
show might be in (another terribly complicated issue that only a
marketing specialist could probably calculate). If that were known, it
might be possible to estimate the percentage of overall viewership
shares your program is likley to claim.

Good luck;

I thought my last reply took care of closing the question and
releasing the payment? You gave me the information that was helpful
and answered my question. Let me know what else I need to do if
anything. I'm new at using this service from google.
Thanks,

This is sloppy, poor research. I found the following on-point
materials: "Substance Use in Popular Prime-Time Television" published
by the National Clearinghouse For Alchohol and Drug Information. It
contained detailed statistics on the number of viewers, time of
airing, demographics, thorough endnotes, etc.

The Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth has published a myriad of
relevant material:
"Youth Exposure to Alcohol Ads on Television" http://camy.org/research/tv0404/
"Alcohol Advertising on Television, 2001 to 2003" http://camy.org/research/tv1004/

Also available, were reports on specified sub-genres like Substance
Use in Popular Music Videos available here:
http://www.mediacampaign.org/pdf/mediascope.pdf

Beyond that, datasets like, "Data Sets from Substance Abuse in Popular
Movies and Music" are available:
http://www.health.org/govstudy/mediastudy/mediadata/default.aspx

And here's the report itself: Substance Use in Popular Movies and
Music http://www.health.org/govstudy/mediastudy/default.aspx

I recommend appendix B "Appendix B: Review of Media Content Analyses: 1980-1998"
http://www.health.org/govstudy/mediastudy/new.aspx#_Toc447073479

The above-cited reports answer his questions directly. Further, they
contain exactly the information the reviewer states only a "marketing
specialist could calculate."

You may forward your opinion to the editors if you wish. The decision
is yours. You will note however, that what I provided was "advice" IN
LIEU OF "an answer" at the request of the customer, who clearly said:

"Thanks for your help which I consider an answer to my question."

The rating shows that he was not altogether displeased so you shouldn't be either.
