Every once in a while I lose my internet connection. This has been
giving me problems off and on for the past two weeks or so. I have
Verizon DSL with Norton Anti - Virus and Firewall and am running
Windows XP. Needless to say, yes I do check to see of the modem and rj
45 cable are plugged in. Here is some background info:

When I loose my connection, internet explorer gives me the "Cannot
find server" error. I used to be able to go to My Computer-> My
Network Connections-> View Network Connections and Repair the LAN
connection and it would work. But recently I got an error from Windows
before I even tried to open internet explorer. When I first turned on
my computer I got a tray icon of my network connection with the yellow
triangle with the exclamation point in the middle. The same thing
occured when I tried to open up internet explorer. The way I was able
to access the internet to post this question was by unplugging my
modem (the power source) and plugging it back in and restarting my
computer.

My question is why has this been happenning (could it be my
modem?) and how can I fix it permanently?

Just to let you know- I religiously run Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and
Destroy after checking for updates.

If we only knew ....
And - true to Murphy's law - just when I've composed the absolutely
correct and well supported comment here to someone's important
question that I can answer completely.
(It happens every time. That's why you haven't seen any of those comments. :-)

But it does happen, and my Fritz! can sometimes be very reluctant to reconnect.
I console myself with the hope that it proves that my security
software has safed me from a worse fate. (Don't ask me about it, I
just have someone who tries to help me.)

Whut --

There are a myriad of potential causes but I'd start with the basics:
try replacing your RJ-45 cable between DSL modem and computer; then
check or replace the cable into your DSL modem.

It's not frequent but cabling does fail. Last summer I had an
Ethernet cable fail after years of faithful service. Of course we
checked cable head-end service; the cable modem; the Ethernet card
itself; TCP/IP settings in software -- all before we replaced the
cable.

Best regards,

Check your online dsl lights to make sure its in sync if it is ive
seen this happen when someone installs service pack 2 for xp.. that
may be the cause.. if thats not it could be the cable.. then the nic
card.. but i would check on service pack 2 and do a reinstall
