3. Summarize the neuroendocrine control of biological rhythms by
answering the following three part question:
a) How do you envision that rhythm-related signals may play a role in
the neuroendocrine control of reproduction and/or food intake (you may
select only one or compare both)? Consider a potential role involving
SCN (suprachiasmatic nucleus) and entrainment signals as well as
hypothalamic and non-hypothalamic neuroendocrine pathways
participating in their control circuitry.
b) In addition, attempt to provide a neuroanatomical structure and a
mechanism of action for these putative elements involved (in the first
section of this question), based on current literature of
neuropeptidergic / neurotransmitter function and biological rhythms.
c) Finally, consider how such control might affect circulating blood
levels of hormone signals involved in reproduction (e.g. hormones
release during puberty and aging, when the capability of sexual
reproduction is first manifested and when it is lost, respectively)
and/or food intake (e.g. hormones release during the states of
starvation and satiety, when an hypometabolic and an hypermetabolic
condition has been set, respectively). |
