We have trumpet vine growing on a trellis that has recently begun to
die. We were told that the ivy growing with it could have emitted a
poison that is killing the trumpet vine. Is this possible? If so,
what fast growing, flowering vine will survive the ivy?

Virtually nothing survives ivy...even trees. Ivy is very aggressive,
and "chokes out" everything else.
