I am making a short video for my web page. I am using PINNACLE Version
8. I have to convert the file from stu. to either wav or avi. Is avi a
more compressed file and does Windows Media Player have a conversion
for this.

you can use virtual dub as the compressing tool and divx as the codec.
The output will be avi format. the compression is maximum
