Hi Looking for a Macintosh OS X paid tutor for my 75-year-old buddy, who's new to computers but who is now really stoked on the technology. He's a neat guy, but is totally new to computers. He's not disabled in any way and is generally very sharp -- just really lost in the computer woods. He'll have a 17" Imac running OS X which I will completely configure for him before shipping it to him (we started on a 15"). The setup we want is for someone to visit him in Longwood FL about 3 times a week for about an hour to review the basics -- like the difference between quitting an app and dismissing its window with the red button. Also, he's fairly fearless and sometimes gets himself into little jams that need to be fixed (like accidently removing his mail app from the dock). This gig should last several months. Good rates paid to the right person. Forget classroom instruction. I had him here in Seattle for a week; and he's absorbed all the concepts, but needs guided practice, practice, practice until things sink in. Plus a little troubleshooting to set him straight when he wanders into a problem. |

Hi Twopiome, Thanks for the question. This is certainly a great gesture, and I'm sure we all wish we had this type of support when we were first getting into computers yo those many years ago. As I was thinking about the best way to attack this, I decided it was best to stay away from the retail computer shops as well as the in-seat training schools. I think you need someone more flexible, and someone who's used to doing in-home computer training. These people exist in every city, but seldom have the resources to advertise, so it is often hard to find them. My first stop was The Real Yellow Pages http://www.realpages.com I did a search for computers in Longwood, FL. I began calling various computer retail outlets in the Longwood area hoping to get a referral. After several unfruitful calls, I finally hit on one. I talked to a salesman at The MacStation in Longwood. Their phone number is (407) 767-8788. He just happened to know of a gentleman who pretty much exclusively does Macintosh in-home computer training, system setup and configuration, software installation, and software training. His contact info is: Phil Robertson (407) 831-2425 Office (407) 924-1761 Mobile He comes highly recommended, and regularly does work for The MacStation retail store. I was going to give you some additional alternatives, but I haven't really come up with anything else. The one school I called is out of business, and no one else could give me the name of anyone knowledgeable in the Macintosh arena. I hope this answers your question adequately. If this doesn't work out, respond with an answer clarification request and I'll keep looking. Good luck, and thanks for the question. I wish I had a friend like you! Prof |

I contacted Phil and he seems to be just what we are looking for. He made some suggestions over the phone that will save us a few bucks too. You hit the jackpot, Prof. |

Hi. Unfortunately for you (but for me also :) all I found was this site: http://www.macfl.com/index.htm Also I have an idea for you: contact a College or an University in Orlando and ask for students that know (or learn) Macintosh and live in Longwood. By the way, Longwoord is Longwood? That's it. I hope it helps. It was fun to read your question! ldcdc-ga |
