I have short term disability offered through work. But aside from pregnancy i would like to know what else is covered. Obviously, I know tragic, or serious accidents, but what medical conditions are covered? illnesses? I'd like to know a wide variety of things that have potentional to qualify. I am in NY state if that is applicable. |

You need to obtain your Summary Plan Description or Group Certificate from your employer to understand what your policy is likely to cover. It will contain a definition of disability. Typically, it is not based on a diagnosis but on your ability to perform the duties of your occupation or any occupation, depending upon the language. Some policies exclude benefits when the claimant's complaint cannot be confirmed through objective medical evidence, such as conditions that only manifest themselves through pain. For tons of information about disability insurance, I strongly recommend www.disabilityinsuranceforums.com. Sincerely, Wonko | |
