Hi noclueatall,
Briefly, even if your passport isn't stamped by other countries as you
travel, when you re-enter the UK you will fill out a "landing card"
which (along with your passport) will be scanned into the Home Office
Database (INDECS) and linked to your ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain)
through a system of bar codes.
1. INDECS is the Home Office Immigration and Nationality Department
Electronic Computer system to aid the procedures for immigration
control.
2. The INDECS system has been operating since 1980, and is used by IND
for recording visitors given "Check out" conditions on Arrival (codes
1-4) and others who seek further leave to remain after entry. It
replaced the earlier manual traffic Index system. Information notified
on INDECS is used to assist with the operation of IND, confirm the
status of overstayers and to collate reports for other Directorates in
IND.

* INDECS - a system which records details of certain categories of
applicant's immigration status on a central database
* file tracking - a system based on bar codes to track IND paper files

Immigration & Nationality Directorate Glossary:
Landing card:
"A card recording personal details to be completed on arriving in the
United Kingdom by all non-EU/EEA passengers."

ImmigrationBoard.com -> United Kingdom -> ILR status:
"The burden if proof will be on you. They will know WHEN you got INTO
the UK by checking landing cards that are linked to you by unique
number on your leave to remain.
Keep all air tickets and as much information as possible."
"If no other country stamps your passport during the last year, it's
possible that they will not know how long you have been out of the
country. But as RBloke pointed out they generally know when you come
in by the landing card or by scanning the passport into their
computer."
"UK immigration no longer (since August 2000) stamp reentering
passports with LTR (WP and HSMP). But they generally do stamp each ILR
reentry, which is more related to New Year's question.
"As per RBlokes comments - the white landing cards you fill in at a
Port of Entry are scanned into a Home Office DB. The Immigration
Officer also swipes your ppt through a reader which updates your
movement's profile in your HO files (commonly known as INDECS) as well
as checks that you are not under a deportation order/ on the warning
list."

hi, hummer,
it is very helpful, thanks so much.
a related question -- while i am 5 months into ILR but couple months
from applying naturalization, i am quitting my job and i don't intend
to find a job at all while i stay in UK for the remaining time. i am
simply taking sabatical leave (doing self study etc, i.e. doing
nothing).
is there any requirement for me to have a job in order to apply for
naturalization (remember i got my ILR after i use my work permit for 4
yrs)?
thanks.
