Question ID: 517692
I am having trouble installing Norton Internet Security 2005. I keep
getting an error message that a previous version is installed, reboot.
I reboot my computer and try to continue the install and get the same
error. I have contacted Symantec twice already and followed their
instructions. I still cannot install it properly. I have downloaded
it to my desktop from the internet (not on CD). Can someone walk me
through how to remove the previous version and finally perform a clean
download?

Since is difficult to give an accurate answer in these cases I will

Start following the instructions on the pages listed below (use the
one that is applicable to your case); read carefully all the pages
before decide which is the one to use:
"Removing your Norton program using SymNRT":
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=&docid=2004020314035036&nsf=tsgeninfo.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=

"Uninstalling and reinstalling your Symantec program after you see error messages":
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2004110113064039?Open&src=&docid=2005033108162039&nsf=tsgeninfo.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=

"Removing Norton AntiVirus 2003 or earlier by using the Rnav2003.exe
removal utility when Add/Remove programs fails":
The manual uninstalling instructions at this page was very useful for
me in the past.

I tried the recommended uninstall procedure (msconfig and regedit),
deleted all Symantec folders, etc as described in the link. I then
tried to reinstall and received the same error message "Setup has
detected that a previous Install or Uninstall has been completed but
requires a restart. Please restart your computer then launch setup
again". I have restarted my computer several times and launched setup
again. I continue to get the same error message. I am very
frustrated.
