Hello mshaid1118-ga, The white house was built in December, 1790 and finished in Nov. 1800. The first president to reside there was John Adams on Nov 1st, 1800. The White House first burned in 1814 and was rebuilt, and since James Madison was in office till 1817, I assume he was the first to live in the new White House. It was burned by the British in the war of 1812. You can read more about why they did it here: http://www.eyewitnesstohistory.com/washingtonsack.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_house Google Search: ://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=president%20in%201814&btnG=Google+Search I hope this helps, Nenna-GA Google Answers Reseacher |
