Hi amanda68-ga,

It's a sobering group of statistics.

According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund,
there were 151 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in
2000. Of the 151 officers who were killed, 47 died in automobile
accidents, 20 were struck by automobiles while outside of their own
vehicles, eight died in motorcycle accidents, seven were killed in
aircraft accidents, three drowned, three died in falls, one died in a
bicycle accident, and one officer was killed in an accident involving
a horse for a total 90 accidental deaths.

In 1999, the number of law enforcement deaths was 130. 47 law
enforcement officers died in automobile accidents, eight were struck
by vehicles, seven died in motorcycle accidents, four were killed in
aircraft accidents, one died in a fall, and one was struck and killed
by a train for a total 68 accidental deaths. The press release notes
that 1999 was "the first year ever that automobile accidents caused
more police fatalities than shooting incidents."
