Hi! Thanks for the question.
One of the most quoted and recent detailed study of the pirated
software industry came from this BSA and IDC report. These are 2003
numbers and were published in 2004. You can also see the piracy
figures for other countries in this document. Here are the numbers for
China.
Piracy Rate Piracy Losses
(in Millions of Dollars)
China 92% $3,823
Notes:
?The Asia Pacific region ranks lower in piracy than the other emerging
regions, despite the fact that three of the top four pirating
countries (Vietnam, China and Indonesia) are in the region. The reason
for this is that two countries with relatively low piracy rates ?
Japan and Australia ? bring down the average.?
?Unfortunately, the high-piracy regions are also the high
market-growth regions. The IT market in the developed world is growing
by less than 4 percent today; it is growing closer to 20 percent in
high piracy countries like China, India and Russia.?

The press release for this report provides a date of July 7, 2004. So
we might have another report like this in the coming months.

Thanx for your answer. However, you've only answered half of my
original question, namely software. Can you provide some information
about hardware piracy (e.g., PCs, routers, and other computing
devices)?

Hi!
Looking for the hardware products category was a lot tougher. The best
source that encompasses almost everything is the report at the senate
for Anti-Gray Market Alliance in 2002. Even the figures are raw
estimates as well.
"AGMA has worked with one internationally famous consulting firm and
determined that an estimated $20 billion in IT products move annually
through the global gray market. Another source has estimated that
counterfeit products make up as much as 30% of the recognized
name-brand products sold in countries such as China."
Taking into account this raw estimate, if 30% are sold in China, then
$6 billion of the IT related market can be found there.

The Impact of Counterfeiting On The High Technology Industry"

I hope this would be of help.
Thanks!

Hi again!
Just as expected, the BSA and IDC has now released a new and updated
study about software piracy for 2004-2005. Here are the new figures.
Piracy Rate Piracy Losses
(in Millions of Dollars)

If you will have trouble with the link above, you can get the report
by passing through this press release first. Just click on the link
"global software piracy study" in the second paragraph.

I'm very happy with the answer for the SW side. However, the answer
to the HW side is less than satisfactory.

Hi again!
The $20 billion figure mentioned in the second report actually answers
the question. Then if 30% or $6 billion is the market for the whole IT
gray market and $3.565 is in the software market, then we can estimate
a figure of $2.177 billion for the hardware market.
Why then only an estimate? It is because our figures are for different
years. A one year period of difference. But this is a good estimate
since based on the recent report (a one year difference from the 2003
report), the piracy rate was down by only 2%. So we're still close.
I hope this clarification will be of help.
Thanks!
