Hi,

Would like a collection of system admin questions for a junior that I
shall give to them to respond to in writing, would like to cover the
following:

1. General PC Support
2. OS's.
3. MS Office
4. Networking
5. Backup
6. Active Directory
7. MS Outlook
8. General programming, i.e. Import/Export scrips/procedures
9. Understands the consept of store front software, access control and POS's..

A quick answer will be very appreciated and this question would expire
in two hours as I won't be available to pickup the answers after that
as I would like to print the questions and head to the meeting with
the person. :-)

Q1  Is there anything special about the IP address 192.168.23.40 ?
A1  It's in one of the reserved ranges of rfc1918.

Q2  Can you name other ranges similar to Q1 ?
A2  10/8 AND 172.16/12

Q3  What is an MTU, and an example value ?
A3  Maximum Transmission Unit (determines frame size), 1500 bytes on ethernet.

Q4  What are some useful features of Perl 5 not available in Perl 4 ?
A4  sysopen() system call, exec() with a supplied argv[0]

Q6   What principles are Saltzer and Schroeder known for ?
A6   Computer security: "least privilege", "safe defaults", ...

Q5  Describe your home computing environment.
A5  Someone without any of the OSs you plan to use is probably not a great help.

Q7  About how many viruses are there ?
A7  Lots.  (Once it's past a few hundred there's no point counting.)

Q8  What's W. Richard Stevens known for ?
A8  The book series "TCP/IP Illustrated".

There are many websites with hundreds of interview questions already
drawn up; the hard part could be browsing the lists to find ones you
consider fair. The questions you will want to ask should depend on
what skills you want your potential new hire to have, so in the end
only you will know which questions are best.
