Hi birdy_edwards, The links to the repertoire and composition lists are here: "Sing Us One of the Old Songs: A Guide to Popular Song 1860-1920," by Michael Kilgarriff [searched inside the book for: "john read" "grandmother's chair" -- results at pages 320, 508] Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0198166575/ref=A9/103-5233896-7451031?keywords="john%20read"%20"grandmother's%20chair"&v=search-inside You can view the pages if you sign into an Amazon.com account (which you can set up for free if you haven't already registered). There's a bit more information if you try the following search: "Sing Us One of the Old Songs: A Guide to Popular Song 1860-1920," by Michael Kilgarriff [search inside the book for: john read] Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0198166575/ref=A9/103-5233896-7451031?keywords="john%20read"%20"grandmother's%20chair"&v=search-inside - justaskscott Search terms used on A9 (http://a9.com): "john read" "grandmother's chair" |

Could John Read ("musician", born approx. 1855 or 1856) be the composer in question? In 1881 and in 1891 he was living in London. |

Or is it rather John Read (born 1839, died 1920), an Englishman who wrote and performed many songs between 1873 and 1904? http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=367723776 Scriptor |
